KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team finished competition at the Tennessee Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee Saturday, April 13.
The day saw EMU student-athletes compete in the Discus Throw, Triple Jump, 4x100m, 4x400m, and 4x800m Relay events.
"We did well in some areas and other areas could have been better," noted Head Coach Sue Parks when asked about the meet's outcomes. "This next month will be all about putting it together and firing on all cylinders as a team as we build for the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championship meet. We still have a lot of work to do."
Eastern Michigan's top finish of the day came from the 4x100m Relay team of senior captain Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell) and juniors Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian), Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga), and Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan. Northeast Magnet), earning a fourth-place finish with a time of 45.53. The group bested squads from Middle Tennessee State University, University of Pittsburgh, Indiana University, and East Tennessee State University for their top-five finish.
Both the 4x400m and 4x800m Relay teams placed sixth in their respective races, as the 1600m Relay squad of freshmen Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School), Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio), and Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) and sophomore Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start) crossed the finish line with a time of 3:44.79, while the 3200m team of freshman Lexi Seifert (Waterford, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy) and Cernej-Garcia, sophomore Madison Distelrath (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Homestead), and senior Jocelyn Sharpe (Westerville, Ohio-Westerville North) finished with a time of 9:34.34.
The Green and White's sophomore Crystal Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.-Carson) and Correena Saintilmond (Miami, Fla.-Hallandale) both competed in the triple jump, finishing sixth and 18th, respectively. Washington cleared 12.15m while Saintilmond leaped 11.00m.
Both sophomore Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) and Savanah Luthman (Minster, Ohio-Minster) participated in the Discus Throw, but fouled all three allotted attempts.
The Eagles take a five-day break from competition, returning to action with a tri-meet weekend April 18-20, performing in the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., the Mt. Sac Relays in Torrance, Calif., and the Don Kleinow Memorial Invitational in Adrian, Mich. For more information on the Eagles, follow the team on Twitter @EMUWXC_TF.
