Skanes joins the Eagles after spending a season at Florida International

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University Head Women's Basketball Coach Fred Castro announced the addition of Florida International University transfer Ce'Nara Skanes (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West) for the 2019-20 academic year. Skanes joins the Eagles for the upcoming season with three years of eligibility remaining, but will not be eligible to play until the 2020-21 campaign due to NCAA transfer rules.

"We are happy to have Ce'Nara Skanes join our women's basketball family," Castro said. "She is someone we recruited out of high school and loved her skill set and intangibles.  The combination of her size and skill make her a dynamic player on both ends of the court, making her a great fit for our fast-paced system. Having played for Coach Adamson we know she knows the value of hard work, discipline, and selflessness."

In her lone season with the Panthers, Skanes played in all 29 games, making 16 starts, while averaging a near double-double with 8.6 points per game and a team-best 8.1 rebounds per contest. An All-Conference USA Freshman Team selection, she led the Panthers in field goal percentage, converting at a 50.8 percent clip, and also paced FIU with 29 steals. Her 8.1 rebounding average ranked first among C-USA freshmen. Skanes also posted a team-high nine double-doubles on the year, which ranked third-most in the league as well as the most among freshmen.

Skanes won C-USA Freshman of the Week honors after her 20-point, 13-rebound performance against Charlotte, March 2. The freshman forward's best scoring output came against Florida Atlantic, Jan. 26, as she poured in a team single-game high of 23 points. Skanes hauled in 21 rebounds against Alcorn State on Dec. 20, which tied for the most in a single-game by any C-USA player for the 2018-19 season.

A 6-foot forward out of Oklahoma City, Okla., Skanes will reunite with high school teammate and current Eagle Areanna Combs as well as her high school head coach in EMU assistant coach Carlos Adamson. As a senior at Putnam City West High School, Skanes led her squad to the Class 6A girls state championship game for the first time in school history. Named Big All-City Player of the Year by The Oklahoman, she averaged 15.5 points and 8.2 rebounds in her senior season.

Skanes joins an Eastern Michigan team that is coming off its second straight Mid-American Conference Quarterfinals appearance, where EMU nearly knocked off top-seeded Central Michigan University.
