Chloe Hinojosa and Gena Remsing join the Eagles for the 2019-2020 season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University Head Rowing Coach Kemp Savage announced the signings of Chloe Hinojosa (Kewanee, Ill.-Kewanee) and Gena Remsing (Vermontville, Mich.-Maple Valley) to the 2018-19 signing class, Thursday, March 7. Hinojosa and Remsing join Kaia Knox (Carmel, Indiana-Carmel), Alexis Kettler (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton), Lena McCaslin (Hendersonville, Tenn.-Pope John Paul II), Claire McCurley (Harrison, Ohio-William Henry Harrison), and Emma Boersen (West Olive, Mich.-Grand Haven) as the newest additions to the Green and White for the 2019-2020 campaign.
Hinojosa joins the Eagles as a four-year letterwinner in basketball at Kewanee High School in Kewanee, Ill. Named captain in her senior season, she led the Boilermakers while averaging 9 points, 1.8 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game. Additionally, Hinojosa recorded the most total blocks for the team during both her junior and senior campaigns. For her senior season's efforts, the Kewanee, Ill. native was recently selected to participate in the 2019 Illinois Valley All-Star game on March 23rd, 2019. A multi-faceted athlete, Hinojosa is also a three-year letterwinner for the Boilermakers volleyball squad, where she was named the most improved player following her freshman and sophomore seasons.
"I chose to continue my career at Eastern Michigan University because it checked off every box imaginable for my dream college," Hinojosa said. "As soon as I walked around campus, I felt at home. I cannot wait to challenge myself both in the classroom and in the water. I look forward to starting my rowing career at Eastern."
When asked about Hinojosa, Savage notes her previous athletic experience as a tool for success in collegiate rowing. "Her athletic background will make her have an immediate positive impact to our team and will help her transition to become a superior rower," Savage said.
Remsing comes to the Eagles as a six-time letterwinner in both volleyball and basketball at Maple Valley High School in Vermontville, Mich. As a Lion, Remsing played middle hitter since 2014 under coach Sarah Carpenter and earned All-Star honors at the Springport Tournament in 2015. Gena has also been playing basketball for 12 years, and at Maple Valley, has been a member of the Lions' basketball team since 2014, and was chosen to play in a game at Allstate Arena, home of the WNBA's Chicago Sky, in 2016.
"Gena has an athletic background that will transition to rowing right away," noted Savage. "She really impressed us on her visit with her outgoing personality and drive."
Remsing was drawn to EMU for its unique balance between personalized educational opportunities while having the aspects of a larger university. "I chose Eastern Michigan because of the unique experience of getting a more personal education experience while having the big campus feel," Remsing said.
The Eagles will next travel to Bloomington, Ind., for a scrimmage against CRCA/US Rowing Coaches' No.16 Indiana University rowing team Saturday, March 23. The meeting with the Hoosiers is set to begin at 9 a.m.
