FORT WORTH, Texas. (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan baseball team left Lupton Stadium disappointed, as it dropped game two of its three game set with No. 20 TCU, 16-4, Saturday, March 16.

Despite a more balanced offensive attack in game two of the series, EMU (3-15-1) was unable to outlast the Horned Frogs, again falling victim to the powerful TCU offense. In all, Eastern surrendered 16 runs on 21 hits in the Saturday soirée. Falling behind in the first inning, 5-0, the Eagles were yet again tasked with overcoming a deficit, one which proved too large in the eventual setback.

Offensively, EMU improved in game two of the series. Starting early, the Eagles put together a strong second inning, scoring two runs during a stretch of four consecutive hits. Leading off the inning, and notching his sixth hit of the season, was freshman Taylor Hopkins (Mason, Ohio-Archbishop Moeller). Sophomore Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) followed suit, cracking a single to put runners at first and second for the Green and White. Taking advantage of the scoring opportunity, senior Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton) poked an RBI double to right field, his seventh of the year. With one run in, junior Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) delivered his team-leading 24th hit of the season, an RBI single, giving EMU its second run of the game.

Later in the contest, redshirt sophomore Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) provided fireworks in Fort Worth, as Eastern's team leader in batting average (.400 entering March 16) blasted his third home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth inning.

In all, Eastern's offense produced four runs on nine hits in Saturday's contest, but was unable to match TCU's effort in the loss.

Defensively, EMU was again challenged by the bats of TCU. After allowing five runs in the first inning, starter Nick Porretto (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva (McHenry C.C.) settled in, allowing just one run over his next two innings of work. In total, Porretto provided four innings of work for Eastern, dialing in nearly 60 percent of his pitches for strikes.

Three additional Eagles saw action from the bump in the contest. Replacing Porretto, sophomore right-hander Holden Cook (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Casady (Murray State)) tossed 63 pitches in two innings for the Green and White. Elsewhere, sophomore Thomas House (Ross, Ohio-Ross) and senior Jackson Shaver (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern (Grand Rapids C.C.) each provided one inning of work for EMU, pitching the seventh and eighth innings, respectively.

Despite its best effort, Eastern surrendered runs in all but one frame, eventually falling 16-4.

Eastern returns to the field tomorrow, March 17, for the third and final game of its weekend set with TCU. An afternoon start, the game will begin at 1 p.m. CT. Following the game, Eastern will return home, before it travels to Indianapolis for a single game, at Butler, Wed., March 20.
