YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - A season-best vault score was not enough to lift the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team past Michigan State University inside the Convocation Center Friday night, March 1. The Eagles posted their highest mark of the season on vault, but came up short against the Spartans, 195.850-194.650.
Eastern Michigan began the meet on vault, where the Eagles scored a season-best 48.900. Juniors Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg) and Allie Smith (Telford, Pa.-Souderton) led the way with a pair of 9.800s, while every other Eagle turned in a score of 9.725-or-better. Seniors Ciara Gresham (Shiloh, Ill.-Belleville) and Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill.-Sacred Heart Classical Center) added a 9.775 each, while sophomores Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and Jada Rondeau (Norwood Young America, Minn.-Central) chipped in a 9.750 and 9.725, respectively.
On bars, sophomore Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) scored a 9.825 to take second-place in the event. Dobronics and Rondeau each turned in a 9.775, while senior Carly Clark (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) registered a 9.750 as Eastern tallied a 48.175.
EMU's beam performance was highlighted by career-best performances by freshmen Shannon Gregory (Edison, N.J.-John P. Stevens) and Carly Kosanovich (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area). Gregory scored a team-best 9.775 to place second, while Kosanovich matched Hultgren's score of 9.750.
The Eagles closed out the meet on floor, where they posted their highest event total of the night. Gresham, Satler, and Dobronics paved the way as each registered a 9.825. Rondeau tallied a 9.800 and Smith and Gregory recorded 9.775's as EMU tallied a 49.050.
Eastern's final push on floor was not enough to reclaim the lead though, as Michigan State edged EMU, 195.850-194.650.
Eastern Michigan returns to action Sunday, March 10, when the Eagles trek to Kalamazoo for a clash with Western Michigan University. The meet is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
