2/9/2019 7:52:00 PM | Women's Track & Field

The sophomore improved her own EMU weight throw record by .48m in the 2018-19 campaign

KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team made its first trip to Kent State University since 2013-14, participating in the Kent State Doug Raymond National Qualifier on Saturday, Feb. 9. The Eagles' trip to the home of the Golden Flashes saw sophomore Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica- Immaculate Conception) break her own school record for the third time this season, clearing 18.69m in the weight throw, good for fourth place.

Clarke's throw not only earned her a top-5 finish at the national qualifier, but also tied the fifth-best effort by a Mid-American Conference Athlete this season.

Throughout the day, EMU secured 12 top-10 finishes. Furthermore, the Eagles' penultimate meet of the 2018-19 indoor season saw eight student-athletes record career-best efforts.

The Green and White had three podium finishes, as senior captain Rebekah Carr (Celina, Ohio-Celina) and sophomore Crystal Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.-Carson) placed second in their respective events while fellow senior captain Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell) earned third. Carr tied for second in the pole vault, clearing 3.53m, earning her the 10th-best vault in the league in 2018-19. Moreover, Harris ran her fastest 60m time this season, crossing the finish line in just 7.52. The Slidell, La. Native now holds the fourth-fastest 60m dash run in the conference this season. The captain also added a sixth-place 200m run of 24.84, leading all Eagles runners in the event. Washington cleared a personal-best 12.21m in her triple-jump performance, tying the second-best mark by a conference athlete.

In the field events, freshman Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) made her collegiate debut in the high jump, earning seventh place by clearing 1.63m. Her effort is the best high jump by an Eagle in 2018-19, and ties for 10th in league standings.

Eastern Michigan competes in its final regular season 2018-19 Indoor meet Friday, Feb. 15, as it heads to Allendale, Mich. for the GVSU Tune Up. The first event of the meet is set to begin at 2:45 p.m. To access the meet's full schedule, visit the Women's Track and Field schedule page on EMUEagles.com.
