Eagles Mark Success at SVSU Tune Up

EMU underclassmen saw eight career-best performances throughout the day

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Nine members of the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team participated in the SVSU Tune Up Friday, Feb. 15, on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University. The day saw nine career-best performances from the Eagles.
EMU earned two event titles at the Tune Up, along with seven podium finishes. Out of 14 performances by student-athletes in the Green and White, 13 were top-10 marks.
Posting the day's two event titles were senior Jocelyn Sharpe (Westerville, Ohio-Westerville North) and freshman Nina Ward (Fairfield, Ohio-Fairfield), both with personal-best efforts in their respective events. Sharpe took the 800m title with a time of 2:18.11, topping her previous career-best time by almost three seconds. Ward topped the podium in the Long Jump, clearing 5.45m. The Fairfield, Ohio native also turned in a fifth-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 1.53m.
Freshmen Tiffany Cernej-Garcia (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Pioneer) and Lexi Seifert (Waterford, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy) each earned their career-best times in the 800m, with a second-place finish of 2:19.91 and a fourth-place effort of 2:20.53, respectively. Additionally, sophomores Madison Distelrath (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Homestead) and Savanah Luthman (Minster, Ohio-Minster) registered top-three finishes in their events, Distelrath with a second-place mark of 5:10.83 in the Mile and Luthman with a weight throw of 16.36m, good for bronze. Rounding out the Eagles' podium finishers was freshman Kaitlyn St. Bernard (Newport, Mich.-Jefferson), whose personal-best mile finish of 5:11.46 was good for third overall.
In the field events, freshman Correena Saintilmond (Miami, Fla.-Hallandale) earned a third-place finish in the long jump, clearing 5.37m, while also logging a career-best triple jump of 10.92m, good for a sixth-place finish. Fellow freshman Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton) earned her personal-best clearance in the triple jump with a jump of 5.22m, good for sixth place. Gazaway also turned in an 18th-place finish in her debut 800m performance with a time of 2:38.70.
