KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Podium finishes from freshman Morgan Iverson (Hoschton, Ga.-Mill Creek) and senior captains Allyson Goff (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) highlighted the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team's first day at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, Friday, Feb. 22 inside Kent State Field House. After one day of competition, the Eagles sit in third place with 37 points, 15.5 points behind first-place Central Michigan University.
EMU sits just two points behind second-place University of Akron, who has accumulated 39 points after day one of the league's title chase. The next three teams all sit more than 10 points behind the Eagles, as University of Toledo has 25 points, and Bowling Green State University and Northern Illinois University have 19 and 15 points, respectively.
"We had some ups and downs today, but overall, it was a solid day for us," Head Women's Cross Country and Track and Field coach Sue Parks said. "We're excited about tomorrow and we look forward to putting it all out there and scoring as many points as we possibly can."
In her MAC Indoor Championships debut, Iverson made her talents known with a second-place finish in the Pentathlon events. Her efforts in all five sub-events were not only career-bests, but her event total of 3,533 points moved her into 10th all-time in Eastern Michigan laurels.
In her final appearance at the league's indoor competitions, Goff cleared 6.02m in the long jump, marking the best leap of her career. Her clearance was also good to move her up three spots in the Eastern Michigan record books, now holding the seventh-best long jump in program history.
Fellow senior Meyers closed out the individual events of day one with a third-place effort in the 5000m run, finishing the distance in just 16:38.37. Meyers also ran a leg of the Eagles' second-place Distance Medley Relay at the end of Friday's competitions.
The Eagles closed out day one of competition with a second-place finish in the Distance Medley Relay, as Meyers, sophomore Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start), senior Jocelyn Sharpe (Westerville, Ohio-Westerville North), and junior Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) finished the relay in 11:45.21.
Also shining in day one of the conference title chase was sophomore Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica- Immaculate Conception), placing seventh in the Weight Throw with a heave of 18.62m. With her toss, she is now the highest EMU finisher in the event in program history, as well as the highest since Becky Leevey placed 11th in the event in 1999.
Five Eagles secured spots in tomorrow's final heats, as the Green and White send two runners to the 60m dash and 400m final heats, and send one onto the 200m and 60m Hurdles' finals.
Both junior Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) and senior captain Jessica Harris (Slidell, La.-Slidell) will perform in tomorrow's 60m dash finals, as Mason ran the sprint in 7.53 and Harris finished just .03 seconds behind her. Sophomore Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central) and junior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) will represent the Green and White in the 400m after crossing the finish line with times of 54.92 and 55.25, respectively. Johnston will also run in the 200m finals after recording a career-best time of 24.26 in the event's preliminary heats. Rounding out the Eagles' qualifiers is freshman Angel Gazaway (Cincinnati, Ohio-Princeton), who used a personal-best 60m Hurdles effort of 8.67 to qualify for tomorrow's final heats.
Tomorrow's events kick off at 12 p.m. with the Triple Jump Finals and Shot Put Finals. Live results are available here, or by visiting the Women's Track and Field team's schedule page on EMUEagles.com.
