Eagles Shock Cardinals, 2-1, in MAC Tournament Opener

11/3/2019 3:55:00 PM | Soccer

The win marks the first tournament win for EMU since 2013

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) - Claiming its first Mid-American Conference tournament victory since the 2013 season, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team upset second-seeded Ball State University, 2-1, Nov. 3 at Briner Sports Complex.

Eastern Michigan jumped on the offensive, seeing their first chance in the fourth minute on a header by redshirt senior Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name) that went high of the goal.

10 minutes later, the Eagles were awarded a free kick at the top of the box in their attacking third. Newly-named MAC Offensive Player of the Week Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) buried the kick in the back of the net to give the Green and White the 1-0 lead and surpass the 50 career points milestone.

Ball State almost equalized in the first half. In the 30th minute, the Cardinals were awarded a free kick at the top of the box, in similar fashion to the Eagles' kick. Junior Chelsea Abbotts (Ottawa, Ontario-Mother Theresa) made the diving save to keep the Eagles ahead through the end of the first half.

15 minutes in to the second half, Ball State broke away from a swarm of EMU defenders and netted their only goal of the afternoon to tie things up, 1-1.

The Eagles saw an opportunity for the win in the 72nd minute, when another free kick was called at the top of the box. Redshirt junior Nicole Remedios (Ajax, Ontario-Archbishop Dennis O'Connor) took the kick, but the curve hit the post rather than the back of the net.

Down to the last minute, Ball State was called for a handball in their box. Freshman Amanda Cripps (Bradford, Ontario-Trinity Catholic) stepped up to take the penalty kick and drilled it to the back right corner of the net for the win, 2-1.

Abbotts finished with three saves for Eastern Michigan, while the Eagles out-shot the Cardinals 16-to-eight. EMU also held the advantage in corners, eight-to-three, and led in possesion, 54%-to-46%.

Eastern Michigan will face Ohio University in the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament Friday, November 8. The time will be announced later in the week and be posted to EMUEagles.com as well as the team's twitter account, @EMUSoccer.
