Eastern Michigan Concludes Fall Schedule With a Win at the Head of the Hooch

Novice boats posted program-best finishes in both races

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team concluded the fall portion of its schedule with an impressive showing at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn., Nov. 2.

Due to an early fog delay, the Championship 4+ race, scheduled for 5:03 p.m., was canceled.

"This is by far the best Head of the Hooch we've ever had," began head coach Kemp Savage. "The novice had an incredibly good showing with a first in the four and a second in the eight. The varsity boats rowed well but had a couple tactical errors that cost them a higher finish."

The Eagles earned the win in the Novice 4+, comprised of freshmen Lena McCaslin (Hendersonville, Tenn.-Pope John Paul II), Emma Boersen (West Olive, Mich.-Grand Haven), Alexis Kettler (Trenton, Mich.-Trenton), Kaialani Knox (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel), and Hailee Hull (Flint Township, Mich.-Reese). They captured the program's best novice finish at the Head of the Hooch with a time of 18:26.012.

In the Championship 8+ race, the Eagles took sixth and 12th place with times of 15:38.375 and 16:31.066, respectively. The sixth-place finish tied the best Championship 8+ finish for the program set in 2018, while the 12th place finish improved one spot from the 13th place finish in 2018.

To finish the day, the Novice 8+ boat of McCaslin, Boersen, Kettler, Knox, freshman Lauren Ahern (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Walled Lake Western), freshman Chloe Hinojosa (Kewanee, Ill.-Kewanne), freshman Saule Matekonis (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville),  freshman Ariel Sutton (Indianapolis, Ind.-Scecina Memorial), and Hull claimed another program-best second-place finish on the 5k course with a time of 17:31.206.

Eastern Michigan beat boats from Oklahoma, Alabama, Louisville, North Carolina, Clemson, Georgia, NC State, Georgia Tech, and Vanderbilt, among other competing schools. "Being able to beat power five schools consistently is a huge step for us," noted Savage.

EMU has concluded their fall racing slate. The spring racing season will begin Feb. 29, 2020 against Alabama and Southern Methodist University.
