Eastern remains unbeaten in dual meets this season
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team continued the fall portion of its schedule with a 167-133 win over Mid-American Conference foe Ball State University Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
The Green and White totaled 11 wins on the afternoon, while also setting two pool records at the Lewellen Aquatic Center.
The 400 medley relay team of senior Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South), junior Elli Machado (Reading, Pa.-Exeter Township), junior Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley) and senior Amelia Armstrong-Grant (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline) claimed the first win of the day for Eastern, while also setting a pool record with a time of 3:50.60.
The other broken pool record came courtesy of senior Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) in the 100 backstroke, clocking in at 56.37. This is the second meet in a row the senior has taken the top spot in the 100 back.
Freshman Savanna Mouat (Tecumseh, Ontario-All Saints) claimed the title in the 1,000 freestyle for the second consecutive week, this time with a 10:34.23 mark.
Freshman Carlin Hudson (Chattanooga, Tenn.-Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences) recorded her first collegiate win, notching a 1:56.88 in the 200 freestyle. Junior Abby Rapien (Cincinnati, Ohio-Taylor) clinched her first butterfly event win, tapping the wall in 2:09.08 in 200 butterfly.
Also notable for the Eagles, junior Alyssa Shugarman (Oswego, Ill.-Oswego), Rapien and Gavigan swept the podium spots in the 500 freestyle for the third EMU podium sweep in two weeks. Shugarman took the top spot at 5:08.97, followed by Rapien at 5:11.87, and Gavigan at 5:14.37.
Eastern Michigan returns home to Jones Natatorium next Saturday, Nov. 9. Taking a break from MAC opponents, the Eagles will host Oakland and Florida Gulf Coast at 1 p.m.
