YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University women's basketball head coach Fred Castro announced the signing of ZaNiya Nelson (Oklahoma City, Okla.-Putnam City West) to a National Letter of Intent, Wednesday, Nov. 13.
Nelson will join the Eagles for the 2020-21 season from Putnam City West High School in Oklahoma City, Okla.
"We are extremely excited to add ZaNiya Nelson to our basketball family today," began Castro. "ZaNiya brings a work ethic on and off the court that is rare to find. Her determination has allowed her to excel as a student and made her one of the most tenacious defenders I have ever recruited. Her ability to turn defense into offense will fit in perfectly with our style of play. She's coming from a championship program at Putnam City West High School where she was coached by Carlos Adamson and Davia Brock."
A three-year letterwinner for the Patriots, Nelson averaged 8.5 points per game, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game as a guard in her junior season. In addition, she has garnered All-Tournament team honors at the Junior Orange Bowl, an All-Tournament selection at the Broken Arrow Invitational, and was named MVP of the Putnam City Invitational.
