All boats finished in third place or higher
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team opened the 2019-20 season at the Head of Grand, hosted by Michigan State University, Oct. 5. Eastern Michigan came away with wins over Michigan State and Grand Valley State, among others.
Of the seven races the Eagles participated in, all boats finished in third place or higher, including two top-spot finishes by V4+ boats.
"We rowed really well in the fours, picking up our first win against a Big Ten team in at least 12 years. We didn't row as well in the eights but still had much better results than previously. The novice eight had a little bit of an issue coming around the turn in the course but recovered well and got some good first-race experience," commented head coach Kemp Savage.
The V4+ boat of Eve Melody (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Jerome), Lena McCaslin (Hendersonville, Tenn.-Pope John Paul II), Amanda Flora (Greenfield, Ind.-Greenfield Central), Emma Boersen (West Olive, Mich.-Grand Haven), and Carly Szymanski (Toledo, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) picked up the first win of the day for Eastern, finishing with a time of 11:59 over Michigan State, Grand Valley State, Case Western, North Park, and Adrian.
The 2V4+ team of Chloe Elwell (Milan, Mich.-Washtenaw Technical Middle College), Haley Dutton (West Salem, Wis.-West Salem), Ashly Matzek (Ellsworth, Wis.-Ellsworth), Caitlin Rodanhisler (Hopkins, Mich.-Hopkins), and Mary Hemgesberg (Freeland, Mich.-Freeland) also claimed a win over a Big Ten opponent with a 12:24 first-place finish in their race.
All four 8+, which consisted of one novice and three varsity boats, finished in second place to wrap up the first competition of the season.
Rowing returns to action Saturday, Oct. 19 at the prestigious Head of the Charles in Cambridge, Mass.
