Redshirt junior Corrione Cardwell was named to the All-MAC West Preseason Team
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team was selected to finish fourth in the Mid-American Conference West Division as the league office announced its 2019-20 preseason poll Wednesday, Oct. 30. Additionally, redshirt junior Corrione Cardwell (Cleveland, Ohio-New Tech East) was named to the preseason All-MAC West team.
Central Michigan, receiving four-of-12 first place votes, was the predicted MAC West Champion, followed narrowly by Northern Illnois, which also received four first place votes but accumulated one less total point in the poll (59), and Toledo. Just behind Eastern (35, one first place) was Ball State with 30 points, while Western Michigan (18) rounded out the rankings. In total, five of the six West Division teams received at least one first place vote.
In the East, Ohio dominated the poll, receiving all 12 first place votes and collecting 72 points while being named East Division Champions. Buffalo (56) and Kent State (50) were slotted second and third, respectively, while Miami (32), Akron (28), and Bowling Green (14) rounded out the poll.
Ohio was also recognized as the favorite to win the MAC Regular Season Championship as well as the MAC Tournament Championship. Aside from the Bobcats, Buffalo and Northern Illinois reeled in one MAC Tournament Championship vote a-piece.
Following an outstanding season with the Green and White in which she scored a career-high 402 points, Cardwell is the second Eagle in as many years to be named Preseason All-MAC West, after Danielle Minott earned the honor a season ago. A versatile guard, Cardwell paced the Eagles with 68 steals a season ago, while setting career-bests in points per game (13.0), field goals made (153), field goal percentage (43.2), three-pointers made (17), free throws made (79), rebounds (130), assists (83), and steals (68).
Eastern Michigan lifts the lid on the 2019-20 campaign on the road Tuesday, Nov. 5, against Michigan State University. Tipoff for the game is slated for 7 p.m.
