Video Recap

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A home match against an in-state rival, Central Michigan, coupled with a championship celebration, set the scene for a special evening of Eastern Michigan University volleyball, tonight, Oct. 3. Despite its setback to the Chippewas, 3-1, the match provided a memory-worthy moment for each player and fan in attendance.

Prior to the on-court action, it was the rafters inside EMU's Convocation Center that provided the entertainment for a crowd of more than 400. In what was a historic moment for Eastern Michigan athletics, a banner was hung to commemorate the 2018 MAC Tournament Champion Eagles. Multiple former EMU volleyball student-athletes were in attendance to witness the unveiling of the banner, a monument that will be forever-bestowed to EMU fans and guests, alike.

Following a roar from the crowd as it witnessed the pre-match ceremony, the two teams took to the floor, providing a thrilling four-set nightcap. Although Eastern (5-10, 0-3 MAC) dominated the first set, 25-18, it was Central (12-2, 3-0 MAC) that emerged victorious in the 88th all-time meeting between the two programs.

In control early, EMU jumped out to a quick first set lead, 8-5, behind stellar blocking. Redshirt senior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central) and freshman Samantha Basham (Granville, Ohio-Newark Catholic) led the way for the Green and White, tallying five blocks each. Haut hit at an impressive .625 clip for the set. Senior Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) added a set-best 14 assists in the first frame as well. Although Central built momentum in the later portion of the set, the Eagles hung on to best the Chips, 25-18.

Down a set, CMU showed determination in the second. Not to be outmatched, EMU played shot-for-shot with the Chippewas through the entirety of the frame. Junior Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) caught fire, hitting for a set-best six kills, while Taylor again paced the team with double-digit assists (10). Senior libero Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian) contributed eight digs in the set for EMU. Close throughout, CMU tied the match at one frame a piece, 25-23.

Following the close second set, Central Michigan took control in the remainder of the match. CMU took its first lead of the night with a four-point, third set win, 25-21, before capping the match with a 25-20 victory in the fourth frame.

Despite the loss, numerous EMU players provided impressive performances. Strefling tied her season-high with 17 kills, while Taylor finished with a new season-best in assists (47). Schomer also set a new season-high with 26 digs.

After a one-day break, the Eagles will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 5, where they will host MAC-East foe Ohio University in a 5 p.m. weekend matinee. Admission to the contest is free.
