YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team shined as hosts of the Can-Am International Saturday, Jan. 26, inside its home territory of the Bowen Field House. Four Eagles snagged the team's five event titles, while sophomore Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica- Immaculate Conception) broke her own program weight throw record just one week after initially setting it.
"We really enjoyed running at home," noted Head Coach Sue Parks. "We saw some improvements in some areas, especially on the field side with Ally (Goff) winning the long jump and Kadian (Clarke) breaking her school record again in the weight throw. Michaela (Nelms) was great in both the 200m and 400m. We saw some great things across the board, and it was just a great day."
Sophomore Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central) earned both the 200m and 400m podium-topping finishes, running a 200m time of 24.64, while finishing the 400m with a career-best mark of 55.24.
Senior and team captain Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) earned the top time in the Mile run, finishing in just 4:52.77, more than eight seconds faster than the field of competition. Her time is the sixth-best ran by a Mid-American Conference athlete this season. She also added a second-place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:13.86.
Also securing an event title for the Eagles on the track was junior Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga), who ran the 60m in a career-best 7.51 seconds, the second-fastest league mark this year.
In the field events, redshirt senior and captain Allyson Goff (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) earned first place in the long jump, clearing 5.92m, not only the third in the MAC this year, but the tenth-best jump in program history.
Clarke broke her own school record 18.21m mark in the weight throw at the Can-Am, clearing 18.30m, good for a fifth-place finish.
The Eagles have a short break before traveling to Notre Dame, Ind. to take part in the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 1-2. More information on future Eagles' meets is available on the Women's Track and Field schedule page on EMUEagles.com.
