EMU travels to Notre Dame, Ind. for the prestigious event held on the University of Notre Dame’s campus
NOTRE DAME, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team ramps up its 2019 schedule when it heads to the prestigious Meyo Invitational, held on the campus of the University of Notre Dame, Feb. 1-2. EMU looks to draw on the successes of its 2018-19 season that has already seen an Eastern Michigan program record broken and a handful of top-10 Mid-American Conference efforts sprinkled throughout.
The Eagles have been regular attendees of the annual meet over the last five seasons, most recently sending a small group of distance runners to last year's event, Feb. 2-3, 2018. Day one of the invitational saw then-freshmen Ashleigh Simonis (Cape Town, South Africa-Melnerton) and Tarynn Cullings (Medina, Ohio-Medina) represent the Green and White in the 5000m, placing 18th and 20th overall, respectively. On the second day of the event, the Eagles placed harriers in the 800m, mile, and 3000m events, highlighted by former eagle Natalie Cizmas' second-place finish in the mile run with a personal-best time of 4:39.38. Then-junior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.- Zionsville Community) clocked in shortly behind her, earning a seventh-place finish with a time of 4:50.19.
EMU enters the weekend coming off the incredible success seen as hosts of the Can-Am International, Jan. 26, 2019, inside Bowen Field House. Sophomore Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central) earned both the 200m and 400m podium-topping finishes, running a 200m time of 24.27, while finishing the 400m with a career-best mark of 54.52. Nelms' 400m time of 54.52 was the best effort by a conference athlete this year, while her 200m time of just 24.27 is good for the second-fastest time ran in the league this season. Furthermore, her 400m time marked the fourth-fastest 400m dash ran in program history, while her 200m time matches the ninth-best time by an Eagle runner. On the field side of the day, redshirt senior Allyson Goff ((White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) earned first place in the long jump. She cleared 5.92m in the event, not only the third in the MAC this year, but the 10th-best jump in program history. Goff also added the Eagles' top finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.63, good for a fourth-place finish.
The Meyo Invitational is a two day meet, with events scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, and 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2. Friday begins with the women's long jump at 4 p.m., followed by the first running event at 4:30 p.m. Saturday kicks off on the track with the semifinal heats of the 60m hurdles at 9:45 a.m., followed by the women's Triple Jump at 10:30 a.m. For a complete schedule of the Meyo Invitational, click here.
