YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team recorded its 16th straight Mid-American Conference
dual victory Saturday, Jan. 19, against the University at Buffalo inside Jones Natatorium. In the closest duel of the season, the Eagles bested the Bulls, 159-141, and saw seven performances that rank in the conference's top-10 efforts this season.

In total, the Eagles captured eight event titles and saw 23 season-best performances against the Bulls. Additionally, with the win, Eastern extended its win streak over the Bulls to five, dating back to the 2012-13 campaign.

"I am really happy with how everyone competed today," remarked EMU associate head coach Tracy Martin. "This was one of the closest duels we've had this season and I think we responded really well to the competition."

The Eagles started off the meet strong, taking both the 200 Medley Relay and 1000 Freestyle event titles. Senior Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) continued her success in the distance freestyle event, tapping in at 9:57.35, the second-fastest time by a MAC swimmer this season. Swartz also earned the top finish in the 500 Free, touching in 12 seconds before the field of competition with a time of 4:53.71. Additionally, her 500 free finish was the eighth-best time in the league this season.

Following suit was fellow senior Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg), as her top finish came in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:01.53. It was the second-fastest league mark, behind only her own time of 1:00.88 at the Denison Invitational. Her other individual effort in the 200 Breast showed similar results, as her first-place finish with a time of 2:15.81 registered the fifth-fastest conference mark in the event this season.

Entering the second diving break, EMU held a narrow lead over the Bulls, up 134-111. The Green and White's 1-meter springboard efforts were one of the deciding factors in the meet, as a podium sweep by junior Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest), senior Gabrielle Mace (Clinton, Mich.-Chippewa Valley), and junior Sophia Tsafantakis (Washington, Mich.-Romeo) lifted the Eagles up 40 points heading into the final two events.  Johnston and Mace's first and second place finishes were decided by less than a point, as the divers finished with scores of 269.18 and 268.20, respectively. Johnston's score also ranked sixth in conference, while Mace's was good for tenth overall in the MAC. Tsafantakis finished shortly behind with a score of 258.67.

Mace also saw success on the 3-meter dive, scoring a career-best 296.78 points for the event title. Her effort was also the fifth-best score by a MAC diver in the 2018-19 campaign.

The Eagles dip back into the pool Jan. 26 as they welcome the Falcons of Bowling Green State University to Jones Natatorium for a duel. The battle of the birds is set to begin at 1 p.m.
