Eagles finish Mid-American Conference dual meet competition with a perfect record

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team captured its 17th-straight MAC dual meet win Saturday, Jan. 26, as they took down the Bowling Green State University Falcons, 167-122, inside Jones Natatorium. With the victory, EMU finished its slate of Mid-American Conference competition with a perfect 3-0 record, and moved to 7-0 in duals for just the fourth time in program history.
The day saw the Eagles capture 11 event titles, while also notching 17 season-best performances. Furthermore, five members of the Green and White also recorded career-best efforts in the battle with the Falcons.
Junior Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Point South) and senior Stephanie Johnston (Holland, Mich.-Hamilton) led the Eagles, as each won two event titles throughout the meet. Young took home the 100 Backstroke title with a 55.19 finish, while also out-swimming the competition in the 200 Individual Medley, earning first place with a season-best performance of 2:06.26. Johnston nabbed both of the top finishes in the sprint Freestyle events, topping the podium in the 50 Free and 100 Free with times of 23.63 and 51.11, respectively. The Holland, Mich. native's 100 Free time of 51.11 was also her personal-best collegiate mark.
Also seeing season-best success was senior Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville), whose time of 1:52.38 in the 200 Freestyle topped the podium and bested the field of competition by over one second. Fellow senior Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) once again snagged the 100 Breaststroke title, swimming in over two seconds faster than any of her competitors, tapping in with a time of 1:02.57.
Additionally, senior Emilie Desnoyers (St. Albert, Alberta) and sophomore Kaitlynd Scanlan (Waukesha, Wisc.-Pewaukee) each earned their first event title of the season, with finishes of 2:04.89 in the 200 Butterfly and 5:06.00 in the 500 Free, respectively.
EMU was once again impressive on the springboard, as both senior Gabrielle Mace (Clinton, Mich.-Chippewa Valley) and sophomore Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) each logged their career-best marks on the 1-meter dive. Mace earned a score of 287.70 in the diving event. while Berger earned a mark of 279.83.
The Eagles close out their home meet schedule Friday, Feb. 1 with a dual meet with Albion College. The meet will serve as a night to recognize the program's nine seniors. The night will start with a special ceremony for the seniors before the Eagles dive into the pool for a 6 p.m meet time start.
