ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team competed in the Wolverine Invitational Saturday, Jan. 12, at the U-M Indoor Track located on the University of Michigan campus. The Eagles saw top-two finishes from four student-athletes, while 11 marked career-best efforts at the event.
"I thought that our results were mixed today", noted Head Coach Sue Parks. "We had some good performances here and there but some areas were disappointing. The early meets tend to be like this, but we know that we need to get better across the board and that will be our goal moving forward."
Senior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) earned her podium finish in the 3000m run, where her time of 9:29.40 marked not only her career-best run, but also moved her to sixth-best time in program history. Her previous mark of 9:33.67, ran in 2017, was the eighth-best time in the Eastern record book. Additionally, sophomore Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central) tallied a second-place finish in the 200m, as her time of 24.45 passed the meet's previous record while also recording her career-best effort. Junior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) finished a mere 0.14 seconds behind Nelms, good for third place.
On the field side, sophomore Crystal Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.-Carson) cleared 12.14m in the triple jump, earning the Green and White's lone event title of the day. Her effort at the Wolverine Invitational was just .01 meters shy of her career-best. Fellow field athlete junior Gianna Salzbrunn's (North Aurora, Ill.-Montini Catholic) cleared 5.44 meters in the long jump, securing her career's best performance as well as rounding out the Eagles' top-two finishes. Salzbrunn also notched a sixth-place finish in the 600m with a time of 1:42.53.
Furthermore, eight additional Eagles saw career-best endeavors at the invitational, as EMU collected more than 23 top-10 finishes throughout the afternoon.
The Green and White next compete on Friday, Jan. 18, as the team travels to University Center, Mich. to partake in the Doug Hansen Open.
