Clarke Paces Eagles’ Efforts at Doug Hansen Open

Kadian Clarke set a program record in the weight throw at the event

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Sophomore Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamacia-Immaculate Conception) recorded the longest weight throw in program history as the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field's saw great success Friday, Jan. 18, at the Doug Hansen Open on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University.
Clarke's record-setting throw of 18.21m bested her personal-best mark by more than a meter, while clearing .36 meters more than previous EMU record holder Angela Scarber's mark of 17.85m.
"This is really exciting for Kadian and the development of our throws area", said head coach Sue Parks of Clarke's accomplishment. "Kadian has worked really hard in the weight room and it's paying off for her."
Furthermore, the Eagles saw 26 student-athletes record career-best performances and four event titles on the successful day of competition.
On the track, the Eagles saw two podium-topping finishes, as junior Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geuaga) and sophomore Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central) earned top times in the 60m and 200m, respectively.
In the field events, Clarke and redshirt senior captain Allyson Goff (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) earned first-place finishes, as Clarke's record-setting throw was good for the top finish in the weight throw, and Goff earned the top mark in the long jump, clearing 5.85m.
"I think that it was a solid day for us," noted Parks. "Our main goal was to compete hard and build momentum for our home meet next weekend. This was a perfect meet to run some "off" events and try some new things. We made some progress in some areas and that's a positive at this point in the season."
EMU next competes in their lone home meet of the season Saturday, Jan. 26. The Can-Am International inside Bowen Field House is set to begin with the first field event at 9 a.m. Official meet information is available by visiting the Women's Track and Field schedule page on EMUEagles.com.
