YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan swimming and diving team opened up its 2019 schedule with a dominant dual win over Wayne State University, Saturday, Jan. 12, at Jones Natatorium. Sweeping every event title, the Eagles saw 12 student-athletes earn top finishes against the Warriors.

With the win, the Eagles move to 5-0 in dual meets for just the fifth time in program history.

Out of the 12 student-athletes who took home event titles, three swimmers earned their career-best times against Wayne State. Sophomore Abby Rapien (Cincinnati, Ohio-Taylor) kicked off the meet with a win in the 1000 Freestyle, tapping in at 10:34.22, more than six seconds faster than her previous personal best. The Cincinnati, Ohio product also recorded her season-best 500 Free time, finishing in just 5:10.21. In the next event, senior Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) earned her personal-best finish in the 200 Free, finishing in 1:53.29 and besting the field of competition by almost three seconds. Swartz also earned her career-best mark in the 200 Back, swimming in at 2:07.02. As the meet was coming to a close, senior Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) made her mark on the Eagles' dominant day by earning her fastest career-time in the 100 Yard Butterfly, finishing in just 57.61. Duncan also earned her season's top-mark in the 50 Free, earning a second-place finish with a time of 24.59.

The meet began with the dominant Eagles 200 Yard Medley Relay, toppling the Warriors by more than four seconds, as the quartet of junior Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville), sophomore Elli Machado (Reading, Pa.-Exeter Township), and seniors Stephanie Johnston (Holland, Mich.-Hamilton), and Dora Vrcic (Dubrovacka, Split, Croatia) tapped in at 1:45.76. EMU never looked back after the first win, dominating the meet and earning four podium sweeps before deferring points for the rest of the meet. Machado went on to win two individual top finishes, sweeping the breaststroke events.

The Eagles continue their four-consecutive-week meet schedule with their first taste of #MACtion in 2019, taking on the University at Buffalo, Saturday, Jan. 19. The meet is set to start at 1 p.m. in Jones Natatorium.
