Eastern Sweeps Toledo to Return to Winning Ways

Redshirt junior Cassie Haut led a balanced attack with 14 kills

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team got back to their winning ways Saturday, Sept. 29, taking down the University of Toledo in straight sets at Savage Arena.

The Eagles jumped on the Rockets early and never looked back, winning 25-14, 25-16, and 25-21. EMU outhit UT, .313 to .189, had more kills, 53 to 28, more digs, 61 to 57, and more aces, 5 to 1. The Green and White are now 3-1 in Mid-American Conference play, the best start in the Kimi Olson era.

Eastern's balanced offensive effort was led by redshirt junior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central), who finished the match with 14 kills and an attack percentage of .591. Sophomore Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan) had 11 kills, while senior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) added 10 kills and eight digs.

The setting duo of redshirt senior Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) and junior Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Merdian) each contributed 18 assists in the victory. Rajewski chipped in on the defensive side with eight digs, while Taylor added to the Eagles' scoring with a match-high three aces. Senior Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) led the defensive effort with 26 digs.

EMU returns to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center next weekend as it welcomes Northern Illinois University to town on Friday, Oct. 5, and in-state foe Western Michigan University, Saturday, Oct. 6.
