Volleyball Sweeps NIU for Best MAC Start Since 2010

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team opened up its four-game homestand with a quick sweep of Northern Illinois University Friday night, Oct. 5, at the Convocation Center. With the win, EMU (12-7) moved to 4-1 in Mid-American Conference play, its best start since 2010.
Eastern Michigan cruised past Northern Illinois (5-15, 3-2 MAC), winning 25-17, 25-16, and 25-17 en route to the Eagles' third straight win over the Huskies. EMU hit an astounding .350 compared NIU's .043 clip, while also outdoing Northern in digs (50-30) and kills (52-21).
The Green and White was paced by redshirt senior Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland), who recorded a season-high 47 assists and orchestrated an EMU attack that saw three players finish with nine-or-more kills. The 47 helpers marked a modern statistical era record for a three-set match. Leading the way was senior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon), who turned in a match-high 15 kills on 30 attempts for a .367 attacking percentage to go along with eight digs. Redshirt junior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central) added 12 kills and four blocks, while Ariel Hamby (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) tallied nine kills on a .615 attacking percentage.
Senior Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) racked up a match-best 14 digs, while junior Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian) chipped in 11 to lead Eastern's defensive effort.
Eastern returns to action Saturday, Oct. 6, as host to in-state rival Western Michigan University. First serve between the Eagles and Broncos is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
