Men's Cross Country Takes Toledo Rockets Invitational in Regular-Season Opener

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team placed first at the Toledo Rockets Invitational Friday, Aug. 31 in Toledo, Ohio. Freshman Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) paced the Eagles with a fourth-place finish, crossing the finish line in 18:54.6.
"The team began training with me Tuesday and we have just been managing our runs in the heat so today was my first glimpse of what we look like, said EMU Head Coach John Goodridge. "I like what I see and now can move forward constructing our training plan."
The Green and White raced 14 harriers and had seven land within the top-20. Following Payne was sophomore Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf) and freshman Luke Brown (Thornville, Ohio-Sheridan), who finished sixth and seventh in 18:59.6 and 18:59.9, respectively. Sophomore team captain Austin Wicker (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) also ran a strong race, placing 11th in 19:05.3. Freshman Noah Perrin (Akron, Ohio-Woodridge) turned in a time of 19:07.3 which warranted a 13th-place finish, with freshman Eddie Zuercher (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River) and senior Tom Jozwiak (Southgate, Mich.-Thomas J. Anderson) rounding out the Eagles who landed in the top-20, as the pair placed 18th and 20th, respectively.
EMU will look to carry its momentum to next weekend when they take part in the Detroit Titan Invitational in Northville, Mich. Saturday, Sept. 8.
