Eagles Prevail in Offensive Explosion at Oakland

5/8/2018 6:37:00 PM | Baseball

It was EMU's first double-digit run output since March 3

ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team came out on top in an offensive explosion over Oakland University, 11-8, Tuesday afternoon, May 8, at Oakland Baseball Field. It was EMU's (19-27, 11-10 MAC) first double-digit run performance since March 3 of this season.

The Eagles were actually out-hit by the Golden Grizzlies (14-29, 11-12 Horizon), 12-11, in the contest, but EMU took advantage of eight OU walks. Eight different players recorded a hit, while seven tallied at least one RBI.

Sophomore Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) launched a two-run home run, his fourth of the season, while also scoring two runs. Freshman Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) had a two-hit, two-RBI day with a double to extend his hitting streak to 20 games, while junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) also had two hits, including a double, notching his team-best 17th multi-hit game of the year. Jones is now one of 22 players in the country to have a 20-plus game hitting streak this season, and his 20-gamer is the eighth-longest active streak in the country.

On the mound, freshman Luke McGuire (Shelby Township, Mich.-Stevenson) picked up his third win of the season after going the first six innings. In relief, junior Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) tossed two scoreless frames with three strikeouts, while freshman Thomas House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross) earned his third save of the year with a scoreless ninth.

EMU jumped ahead early, tagging the Oakland starter with a leadoff double from Nate Jones, followed by a two-run home run from Owings, to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, sophomore Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) drew a two-out walk, and Eastern didn't even need to bat him home, as two wild pitches and a passed ball eventually scored him, putting EMU up 3-0.

Oakland had the immediate response, however, coming back with six runs in the bottom half of the inning to leap ahead, 6-3, after one. Both offenses cooled off a bit in the second and third, keeping it a three-run game into the fourth.

Eastern answered back in the top of the fourth, tying the game up at six. Back-to-back doubles from freshman Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) and redshirt freshman Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) plated the first run. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded, Nate Jones singled in the tying runs, knotting the game back up after four.

The Golden Grizzlies got the lead back in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run, putting them up one, 7-6, with four innings to play. They tacked on another in the sixth to go up two with three to go.

EMU rallied in the top of the seventh with three runs to take the lead back, 9-8. The inning began with an RBI single from junior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge), which came after a leadoff single and stolen base from Schuemann, getting EMU to within one. Later on, the Golden Grizzlies had some control problems, walking three Eagles in-a-row, the latter two RBI walks to sophomore Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and redshirt junior Alex Wolanski (Naperville, Ill.-Neuqua Valley), to give Eastern the one-run advantage into the stretch.

After a 1-2-3 seventh from Hester, the Green and White added some insurance in the eighth in a sloppy frame. The first run was knocked in by junior Kolton Schenker (Augusta, Kan.-Augusta (Labette C.C.)) on an RBI ground out. Later in the inning, Oakland had a throwing error on a stolen base, which scored the 11th runner of the game putting Eastern up 11-8 in the eighth.

Hester kept shoving in the eighth, retiring all three batters faced on a double play and his third strikeout to take it to the ninth. There, House came on and retired all three batters to lock down his third save of the season.

Eastern turns right back around for a home game tomorrow evening, May 9, against the University of Dayton. First pitch against the Flyers is set for 6 p.m.
