Baseball Tripped Up in Series Finale at CMU

5/6/2018 5:00:00 PM | Baseball

Freshman Nate Jones extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a home run

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell short of the weekend sweep in a 12-3 defeat to Central Michigan University Sunday afternoon, May 6, at Theunissen Stadium. Despite the defeat, EMU (18-27, 11-10 MAC) won a weekend series over CMU (20-25-1, 12-9 MAC) for the second straight time.

The highlight of the day came offensively from freshman Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) who extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a boom, a three-run home run, the first of his EMU career. Junior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) tallied a two-hit game, both singles.

Following a scoreless first, CMU jumped ahead in the second with a run on two hits. Later in the frame with two on, EMU turned its third double play of the weekend to limit the damage to 1-0 after two. CMU added another run in the third on a sacrifice fly, but two runners were left on base to keep it tight into the fourth.

EMU got their first two hits of the game in the fourth, putting runners on the corners with just one out. Despite the prime opportunity, the runners were left stranded, keeping it 2-0.

The Eagles capitalized on a pair of runners in the top of the fifth, as Nate Jones extended his hitting streak in a big way, as he smacked a three-run home run to deep right center field. His first collegiate homer gave EMU its first lead of the day, 3-2.

EMU's edge was short lived, however, as CMU struck for six runs in the fifth inning, including three unearned on an error, to make it 8-3 at the midway point of the game. Both teams were blanked in the sixth, but CMU broke the game open in the bottom of the seventh with their second grand slam of the weekend, putting the tally at 12-3 with two frames to go.

Despite holding CMU off the board in the eighth in a 1-2-3 inning from freshman Thomas House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross), Eastern did not have any more opportunities to score, falling short of the sweep, but still coming away with the series win.

The Eagles remain in the Mitten State Tuesday, May 8, for a midweek game at Oakland University. First pitch against the Golden Grizzlies is set for 3 p.m.
