TAMPA, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team closed out its weekend at the NCAA East Regionals Saturday, May 26, on the campus of the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla.
EMU had representatives in two events during the last day of NCAA preliminaries. Junior Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.-Parkland) opened up the day for the Eagles in the javelin. In the event, Ziegenfuss threw to a distance of 56.32m, which ranked 39th. As only the top-12 placers advance to Eugene, the junior's strong 2018 outdoor campaign has come to a close.
The second event Eastern had competitors in was the 1600 relay. Although the quartet ran to a strong time of 3:09.18, they just missed out on punching their ticket to the championship rounds, placing just one spot out of the qualifying teams at 13th. Overall the squad had an outstanding season, as redshirt senior Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay), junior Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton), and freshmen Tyler Johnson (Dayton, Ohio-Stivers School for the Arts) and Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England) were named MAC Champions in the event, while also recording the sixth-fastest relay time in EMU history during the regular season, 3:07.38.
This marks the conclusion of the NCAA East Regional, with the season set to wrap up in two weeks at the NCAA Championships, Wednesday-Saturday, June 6-9, in Eugene, Oregon.
