List of Women NCAA East Regional Qualifiers
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team resumes its postseason this weekend Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26, at the NCAA East Regionals located on the campus of the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla. EMU has a total of seven competitors who will be competing in five running events and two field events.
This season, three out of Eastern's seven qualifiers head into the weekend as All-Americans from the indoor campaign. Redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83), and seniors Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area) and Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Clinton) were named First Team All-Americans after placing seventh in the nation in the distance medley relay. Additionally, Bogdanova went on to finish 11th in the 3000m steeplechase, the same event she will take part in this weekend.
Furthermore, Cizmas and Jones will be competing in their second NCAA East Regional competition, with Cizmas taking part in the 1500m, and Jones running in both the 200m and 400m dash.
Altogether, EMU has five All-Americans ready to take on the NCAA Championship preliminaries, with all seven already having experience at the regional stage.
Last season's regional competition saw two student-athletes qualify to the national championships in the form of Bogdanova and senior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison).
Bogdanova will look to qualify to a national championship for the third time this season, after reaching both the cross country and indoor track and field championships. Moreover, if the Kazan, Russia native qualifies to the national championship, she will have the opportunity to bring home outdoor All-American honors for the second-straight year, having finished runner-up in the 5000m last season.
McDermitt also has the opportunity to continue an impressive streak of her own when she competes in the 5000m this weekend, as she has qualified to the national stage during the last two outdoor campaigns. This past outdoor championship, McDermitt raced hard to a 21st-place finish in the 10000m, earning Honorable Mention All-American honors. Running alongside McDermitt in the 5000m is junior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville), who had her regionals debut last season. Meyers is most recently coming off the Mid-American Conference Championships, where she finished runner-up to Bogdanova in the 5000m, earning Second Team All-MAC honors.
Joining McDermitt as the only other Eagle qualifier that will be competing in their fourth regional is senior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1). Dreimane has the opportunity to qualify to the NCAA Championships for the second time in her career, after she accomplished the feat and earned Second Team All-American honors in the triple jump during her freshman year. Senior Janina Pollatz (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian) rounds out the Eagles in the field events, as the senior captain will take part in the pole vault during her second trip to the NCAA East Regionals.
The action-packed weekend gets underway Thursday with Cizmas competing in the 1500m first round at 6 p.m. The following day has Pollatz getting things started in the pole vault at 4:30 p.m., while Jones competes in the 400m quarterfinals at 5:45 p.m. and the first round of the 200m at 7:55 p.m. Putting a cap on Friday is Bogdanova, as the 3000m steeplechase will be the last event of the night, scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. The final day of competition has Dreimane participating in the triple jump at 4:30 p.m., which will be followed by the 1500m quarterfinal at 6:45 p.m., the 200m quarterfinal at 7:50 p.m., and McDermitt and Meyers in the 5000m semifinal at 8:45 p.m.
