EMU to Send 10 to NCAA East Regional

Five of the regional qualifiers will be competing in their first championship preliminary
East Men's Preliminary Round Qualifiers
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team qualified 10 to the NCAA East Regionals held in Tampa, Fla. Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26. EMU will have representatives in four track and three field events throughout the three days of competition.
In order to qualify for the NCAA East Regional, an individual must be among the top 48 declared student-athletes in their respective events. For each relay event, the top 24 declared relay teams are accepted into the competition.
Qualifying to the championship preliminaries for Eastern are redshirt seniors Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge), Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay) and Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Erie), juniors Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio-Huron), Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) and Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.-Parkland), as well as sophomores Colin Etchen (Edgerton, Ohio-Edgerton) and Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla.-Blanche Ely), and freshmen Tyler Johnson (Dayton, Ohio-Stivers School for the Arts) and Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England).
This will be the fourth time Brown competes in the regional meet, while it serves as the third time for Andresson and Ziegenfuss, the second time for Raymond, and the first trip for Etchen, Findlay, Johnson, Harkey, Richardson, and Underwood.
Brown, Underwood, Johnson, and Richardson will each run a leg in the 4x400 relay, with the quartet seeded at 15th in the region. The squad's time of 3:07.38 was good for second at the Tennessee Relays, April 12, but currently ranks 54th in the nation and sixth all-time in EMU history.
Raymond will head into the weekend of competition with the highest seeding of all EMU individual qualifiers, as the Erie, Mich. native ranks 17th in the 10,000m. His career-best time of 29:25.66 came during the Raleigh Relays, March 31, where he raced to a 12th-place finish.
The second-highest seed earned by the Eagles comes courtesy of Andresson, who is slotted at 30th in the 3000m steeplechase. Andresson posted his season-best time of 8:58.15 at the Mid-American Conference Championships last weekend, which was one-of-three performances that resulted in a first-place finish and MAC Most Valuable Performer honors.
Rounding out EMU's competitors in the track events is Findlay, who will take part in the 110m hurdles. His qualifying time of 14.05 also came during the MAC Championships, as he ran strong to a second-place finish to earn Second Team All-MAC honors.
Harkey leads the way in the field events, ranking 34th in the hammer throw with a personal-record distance of 61.69m. Not only does that distance serve as a personal-record, it also comes in at third all-time in Eastern's laurels.
Another Eagle who finds himself in the top-10 of EMU's record book is Ziegenfuss. Although his career and program-best javelin throw came last season, his distance of 66.01m he reached this campaign is seeded at 36th in the region and would rank third all-time in Eastern history.
Finally, Etchen will represent the Green and White in the pole vault, as his height of 5.06m granted him a first-place finish in the Toledo Invitational, May 3, and comes in at 46th in the east region.
