BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team won its 24th Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championship Saturday, May 12 in Buffalo, N.Y. The Eagles totaled 184.5 points en route to their first championship since 2015.
Additionally, with that title, the Eagles finished their year as the MAC cross country, indoor, and outdoor champions. This is the fourth time the program has completed the triple crown (2000-01, 01-02, 06-07) since 1981, and just the seventh time the feat has been accomplished in the conference history for both men and women.
"I'm so proud of these guys for never giving up and continuing to compete for the title and triple crown," said EMU Head Coach John Goodridge.
With just two events left, Eastern headed into the 5000m in second-place behind the University of Akron, and left with a 10.5-point lead. The Eagles were paced by redshirt senior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge), who captured his third event title of the weekend by placing first with a time of 14:36.67. Redshirt seniors Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Erie) and Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium-Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven) also put together strong performances, as the two finished fourth and eighth with times of 14:40.40 and 14:55.57, respectively. Altogether, the trio of Eagles laid claim to 16 points to put them in first with just the 4x400 relay to go.
Eastern sealed the championship in the 1600m relay, as the quartet of redshirt senior Tyler Brown (Findlay, Ohio-Findlay), junior Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton), and freshmen Tyler Johnson (Dayton, Ohio-Stivers School for the Arts) and Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England) won EMU's fifth event title of the weekend with a time of 3:10.85.
Brown, Richardson, and Underwood also had strong showings in the 400m dash. Brown led the way, taking home the fourth outdoor 400m title of his career with a time of 47.03. Following close behind was Richardson, who placed second with a personal-record time of 47.18. Rounding out the EMU sprinters in the 400m was Underwood, finishing fifth in 47.66.
Johnson also ended the weekend with multiple medals with his performance in the 200m dash. The freshman capped off his impressive rookie campaign by earning Second Team All-MAC honors, finishing strong at the end of the race to jump into second with a time of 20.91.
Eastern had a fantastic day in the 110m hurdles, with both Eagles earning personal-records while reeling in some points for the Green and White. Sophomore Devonte Findlay (Lauderhill, Fla.-Blanche Ely) won silver with a time of 14.05, while sophomore Ivan Suazo (Columbus, Ohio-Westland) ran hard to a finishing time of 14.31, placing fourth.
In the last day of field events, junior Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) was the lone Eagle to medal, as he won bronze in the triple jump with a distance of 14.82m. Junior Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio-Bishop Hartley) had the highest placement for EMU in the high jump, clearing a height of 2.06m to finish fourth.
Along with the team championship, Eastern had a number of individuals earn honors in the award ceremonies. After winning the 5000m, 3000m steeplechase, and 10,000m, Andresson earned MAC Most Valuable Performer for the first time in his career. Moreover, Johnson was named MAC Freshman Track Performer of the year, joining freshman Owen Day (Ottawa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf) who earned the same honors during the indoor and cross country seasons. Finally, for directing the team to another season of tremendous success, Goodridge won his fourth MAC Outdoor Head Coach of the Year award.
With that, the season has come to an end for most of the student-athletes. However, we will now wait to see if any individuals qualify for the NCAA East Regionals in Tampa, Fla. Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26.
