Eastern Has Strong First Day of MAC Championships

The Eagles had two qualifiers in the 200m dash and three in the 1500m run

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team completed day one of the 2018 MAC Outdoor Championships Thursday, May 10 in Buffalo, N.Y. The Eagles set themselves up for success with several student-athletes qualifying for the 200m and 1500m championship rounds.
The opening day of competition had the championship rounds of the 10,000m, hammer throw, and javelin throw, along with four events in the heptathlon and a number of preliminaries.
In the 10,000m final, senior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) finished fifth with a time of 34:40.92, bringing in four points for the Eagles. Eastern also had two freshmen compete in the event, as Ashleigh Simons ( Cape Town, South Africa-Milnerton) and Tarynn Cullings (Medina, Ohio-Medina) raced to ninth and 15th-place finishes, respectively.
Sophomore Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill.-Joliet West) got Eastern rolling with her performance in the javelin, as she tallied EMU's first two points of the weekend with her seventh-place finish.
Eastern had all three representatives in the 1500m qualify for Saturday's championship final. Junior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community) paced the Eagles with a time of 4:34.81 to finish second in a group of 20 runners. Senior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley) and redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83) raced strong to eighth and 10th-place finishes with times of 4:40.35 and 4:41.24, respectively.
Additionally, EMU had two of its three 200m dash competitors qualify to Saturday's championship heat. Senior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area) and sophomore Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) both finished within the top-eight to qualify, with Jones placing fourth with a time of 23.80, and Johnston finishing sixth with a personal-best mark of 24.08.
Tomorrow's action gets started at 10:30 a.m. with the second half of the decathlon and heptathlon. The day will also include more preliminaries and the championship rounds of the women's 3000m steeplechase, long jump, shot put, and pole vault, as well as the men's championship 3000m steeplechase, long jump, and shot put.
