EMU was shutout for the first time this season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell short of the series sweep in a 5-0 defeat to Ball State University Sunday afternoon, April 8, at Oestrike Stadium. It was the first shutout loss of the season for EMU (10-18, 5-4 MAC).
Senior Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) took a tough loss after going the first five innings, only allowing one run on four hits with three strikeouts. In relief, freshman Scott Granzotto (Northville, Mich.-Gabriel Richard) tossed a scoreless frame, only needing nine pitches to get three outs.
The Eagles' offense went cold again as it did Friday, as EMU only mustered five hits spread among five batters. Sophomore Zachery Owings' (Saline, Mich.-Saline) hit was a double for the lone extra base hit of the day.
The first three innings were quick as DeVenney only allowed a few base runners to go along with a couple of strikeouts. BSU (15-15, 4-5 MAC) finally broke through in the top of the fourth with a run on a couple of hits to take a 1-0 lead into the middle of the fourth.
EMU's offense continued to sputter through the fourth and fifth, but Granzotto's quick sixth inning kept it a one run game. The Ball State lead extended in the top of the seventh with a pair of runs on three hits and an error, making it 3-0 into the stretch. Another 1-2-3 frame for the EMU offense in the bottom of the seventh brought things to the eighth.
Ball State tallied runs in each of the eighth and ninth, while three of EMU's five hits came in the eighth and ninth, but it was not enough in the five-run defeat.
Eastern continues its home swing with a midweek game against Oakland University Tuesday evening, April 10. First pitch from Oestrike is set for 6 p.m.
