EMU Captures Event Title in First Day of Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team had representatives compete in the hammer throw and triple jump during the first day of the Spartan Invitational Friday, April 6, in East Lansing, Mich.
Eastern's best finish of the day came courtesy of junior Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), who put together the best triple jump performance of his career, reaching a distance of 15.14m to place first in the meet. Not only does that mark a personal-record for the junior, but it also serves as the top distance in the conference this season.
Junior Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio / Huron) paced the hammer throw squad, placing third with a throw of 51.92m. Finishing sixth in the event was redshirt junior Austin Hazek (Medina, Ohio-Medina), who threw to a personal-record distance of 48.92m. Furthermore, freshman Kevin Fofanah (Providence, R.I.-Classical) competed in his first hammer throw as an Eagle, marking a distance of 43.42m.
Competition at the Spartan Invitational continues tomorrow with field events commencing at 10 a.m. Additionally, EMU will have a small cohort of pole vaulters competing at the Hillsdale Invitational in Hillsdale, Mich., with their event scheduled to begin at 1:15 p.m.
