The Eagles return to action Friday-Saturday, April 27-28
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – An early deficit was too much to overcome as the Eastern Michigan University fell, 9-1, in non-conference action against Michigan State University at Secchia Stadium Tuesday, April 24.
EMU used all three pitchers in the game, as freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) got the starting nod, while senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) and junior Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) appeared in relief. Miranda went a team-high 2.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits, and adding a strikeout, while Hurley was sacked with the loss.
At the plate, junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) and freshman Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.-Ladywood) combined for EMU's two hits. Holdsworth also notched EMU's lone extra base hit, a double, and an RBI.
Michigan State sent eight batters to the plate in the opening frame, erupting for five runs on four hits and a walk, before tacking on three in the second and one in the third. MSU's hot start put the Spartans in command, 9-0, into the fourth.
Akles gave EMU its first hit of the game, a leadoff knock in the fourth, to get the Eagles offense rolling. Junior Alex Peters (Oscoda, Mich.-Alpena) entered to pinch run and promptly moved into second on sophomore Arielle Anderson's (Marion, Ohio-Pleasant) sacrifice bunt. Holdsworth capped the inning with an RBI double to right center, cutting MSU's lead to eight, 9-1, through three and a half.
Eastern Michigan returns to Varsity Field this weekend, April 27-28, for a three-game set against Mid-American Conference West Division foe Ball State University. The series begins Friday, April 27, with a 3 p.m. first pitch, followed by a doubleheader Saturday.
