Baseball Falters Late In Series Finale at Toledo

4/22/2018 5:31:00 PM | Baseball

Freshman Nate Jones extended his hitting streak to 10 games

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team faltered in the late innings in a 9-5 defeat to the University of Toledo Sunday afternoon, April 22, at Scott Park. The Eagles (14-22, 8-7 MAC) led by two in the bottom of the seventh, but six UT (14-22, 8-7 MAC) runs in the seventh and eighth innings did EMU in.

Despite the setback in the game and the series, EMU still is positioned near the top of the MAC standings, sitting at 8-7 after five of nine series played, good for a tie for third place.

The Eagles offense was stout, striking for nine hits to score the five runs. Sophomore Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) remained red-hot, going 3-for-4 with a double and walk, keeping his team-leading batting average at .364 on the year. Freshman Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) extended his hitting streak to ten games in a two-hit game, including a double and two runs scored. Finally, junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) had a two-RBI day, his seventh of the season.

On the mound, EMU got an encouraging scoreless inning from junior Caleb Hester (Coloma, Mich.-Coloma) in his first appearance since April 1 due to injury, striking out one. Junior Jackson Shaver (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern (Grand Rapids C.C.)) took a no decision in his start after going just the first three, but striking out five. He now has 24 strikeouts in his last 19 IPs.

Eastern struck first for the third time in the series with a run manufactured in the first inning. Nate Jones led off with a double, followed by back-to-back ground outs, the latter an RBI ground out from Schuemann, to make it 1-0 in the first. Toledo tied it up immediately in the bottom of the first with a run on a trio of hits, making it 1-1 after one.

Shaver ran into some trouble in the second, loading up the bases with no outs, but the tall righty battled back to strike out the side, and keep the game at 1-1. EMU capitalized on another Nate Jones hit in the top of the third, as he was knocked in once again by Schuemann, this time on an RBI single, to put EMU back ahead, 2-1.

EMU added on two more in the top of the fourth after loading up the bases with no outs on a walk, hit by pitch, and bunt single. Sophomore Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) knocked in the first on a sacrifice fly. That was followed up later on a bases loaded walk from sophomore Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), extending the Eagles' advantage to 4-1 in the middle of the fourth.

Toledo almost tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth, getting two runs in on a sacrifice fly and RBI single, but on that single, the tying run was gunned down at home on a nice relay from Nate Jones to Schuemann to freshman Eli Gora (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson), to keep it a 4-3 contest into the fifth.

The Green and White got into some more trouble in the fifth, allowing two to reach base, but freshman Dillon Schroeder (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford Senior) was able to get a ground out to end the frame, holding the one-run advantage after five. The Eagles got some good fortune to score another run in the sixth. With two outs and a man on third, a routine grounder to second was muffed by the Toledo second baseman, allowing the runner to score, and putting EMU up two.

Toledo finally broke through with a four-run bottom of the seventh, scoring just two of them earned, to jump ahead by two, 7-5, with two innings to play. Eastern got the tying run on second in the top of the eighth, but Toledo escaped the jam, to keep the score stagnant. The Rockets added two more to its tally in the bottom of the eighth, and EMU stranded a leadoff double from Owings in the ninth to seal the game.

Eastern gets right back into action on Tuesday, April 22, for a special midweek game against Michigan State University at Comerica Park. First pitch against the Spartans at the home of the Detroit Tigers is set for 6:35 p.m.
