It was Eastern's third shutout win of the season
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team blanked its third opponent of the season with a 4-0 victory over Lawrence Tech University Wednesday, April 25, at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles (15-22, 8-7 MAC) defeated the Blue Devils (23-18, 11-10 WHAC) in the first meeting between the two programs since 1950.
Freshman Luke McGuire (Shelby Township, Mich.-Stevenson) pitched a career-high eight scoreless innings, allowing four hits while setting a personal best with seven strikeouts. At one stage, McGuire retired 14 consecutive batters en route to his second win in as many starts. Entering the contest in the ninth, fellow freshman Scott Granzotto (Northville, Mich.-Gabriel Richard) sent Lawrence Tech down in order to wrap up the contest.
At the plate, junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) recorded three hits for the third time this season, going 3-for-4 with three singles, an RBI, and a run scored. Junior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) finished 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and an RBI, while sophomore Nick Jones (Battle Creel, Mich.-Lakeview) went 2-for-3 with two singles and a run scored.
EMU wasted no time building its lead, recording three runs on four hits in the opening frame. Freshman Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) and Nick Jones started the contest with back-to-back singles up the middle to put runners on the corners with nobody out. The hit parade continued, as Schuemann hit a ground ball that ricocheted off the pitcher's foot towards third base for an infield single, scoring Nate Jones to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
With two on and still nobody down, sophomore Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) doubled the Green and White's advantage with a base hit into shallow right that plated Nick Jones. The Green and White added a third run two batters later when Rensel Jr. lifted a sacrifice fly into deep center to drive in Schuemann.
The Eagles were able to manufacture another run in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) brought home junior Kolton Schenker (Augusta, Kan.-Augusta (Labette C.C.)) on a sacrifice fly to right to give the Green and White a 4-0 cushion, which held on to be the final tally.
Eastern Michigan returns to conference play this weekend, April 27-29, when it hosts the Western Michigan University Broncos. The series at Oestrike Stadium begins Friday with a 6 p.m. first pitch.
