ROCKFORD, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team wrapped up the 2018 regular season by rolling to a 6-1 victory over Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois University Friday, April 20, at the Boylan Tennis Center.
For the first time since MAC play began, Eastern Michigan (16-9, 3-5 MAC) came away with the doubles point to start the match. After NIU (5-17, 0-7 MAC) took the No. 3 matchup, the No. 2 duo of junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) and freshman Giuliana Ansaloni (Bergamo, Italy-Centro Studi Leonardo Da Vinci) evened things up with a 6-3 win. The senior pairing of Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) and Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) secured the point for the Eagles with a 6-4 victory at No. 1.
"It was nice to finally take a doubles point in MAC play! If we had don't this a few more times this season it would have made life much easier!" said Head Coach Jayson Wiseman. "From 1 through 6 this was an very good performance, even though we lost at No. 3, the effort we played with was fantastic."
As the match turned to singles, freshman Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) kept the winning ways going for the Green and White with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5. Senior Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) followed with a convincing 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 6. Coming away with the fourth and match-clinching point for Eastern was Ansaloni, who won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4. With the match in hand, Eastern dropped the No. 3 spot, but finished on a high note with Mayerova's 6-4, 7-6 victory at No. 2, and Gogvadze's 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 1.
With the win, Gogvadze becomes the first Eagle in the modern statistical era to finish with 20 wins in a dual season. Her regular season record finishes at 20-2 overall with a 6-2 mark in MAC play. Barcelo Almoyna, another one of EMU's seniors, finished the season on a 16-match winning streak, a dual mark of 18-3, and a MAC record of 8-0.
"This was a great day for Ani and the program with her teaching the 20 win plateau," said Wiseman. "It's something that she can always take with her as the firstrecorded player to reach that feat at EMU. For that to happen on the same day as Alejandra extending her win streak to 17 matches she has ties Ani wins streak from earlier in the season and reach 18 wins on the season, and most impressively 8-0 in the MAC is very special moment."
Eastern Michigan is in wait-and-see mode for the rest of the weekend, waiting the results of several other Mid-American Conference foes to determine its playoff fate.
"We have fought so hard this season and showed much improvement over the last couple of seasons," said Wiseman. "I think that we have surprised a lot of people with how well we have played, now we just have to watch, wait, and hope it's enough to get into the MAC tournament."
