EMU fell, 4-2, to Bowling Green, ending the season 16-10
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team saw its 2018 season come to an end in the opening round of the Mid-American Conference Championships at the hands of Bowling Green State University, 4-2, Friday, April 27 at Cardinal Creek.
EMU jumped ahead thanks to a win in the doubles point, just its second doubles win against a MAC opponent this season. The No. 3 pair of Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) and Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Pacheco) kicked things off with a convincing 6-1 win. No. 2 duo Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georiga-Khikhani) and Andrea Matinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) clinched the point with a 6-3 victory.
Unfortunately, the Eagles were unable to grab the momentum on the singles side of play. Bowling Green quickly re-gained the lead thanks to easy wins at No. 3 and No. 4. The outlook began to look bleak when the Falcons took the fifth singles spot for their third point, but junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) kept EMU's hope alive with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2.
With the match hanging in the balance, Bowling Green was able to come out ahead with a win at No. 1 singles thanks to a tiebreak victory. Barcelo Almoyna was leading at No. 6 singles, but the match was called once BGSU secured the win.
The loss ends Eastern's campaign with a record of 16-10, its best season since 2004 when the Eagles went 16-6.
