YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team could not get things going offensively in a 7-0 setback in the series opener against Northern Illinois University Friday afternoon, April 20, at Varsity Field.
Senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier,Calif.-California) shouldered a majority of the work in the circle for EMU (9-30, 5-10 MAC), going four innings in relief with four strikeouts. Freshman Kiara Hurley (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) tossed the first 2.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits, while tallying two Ks.
Offensively, the Green and White tallied five hits spread out among five Eagles. Senior Angel Schilke (Saline, Mich.-Saline) and freshman Sophia Holland (Lugoff, S.C.-Lugoff-Elgin) both went 1-for-2 on the day to pace EMU.
Northern Illinois (15-26, 6-8 MAC) plated two runs in back-to-back frames to jump out to a 2-0 lead through two and a half innings of play. After taking advantage of an EMU error with a two-run single, NIU doubled its lead with a two-run homer to left.
Eastern Michigan had no answer for NIU's Alex Frenz, recording just one hit over the final five innings. Meanwhile, the Huskies tacked on a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth, to hand the Eagles a 7-0 defeat.
The Eagles and Huskies return to Varsity Field tomorrow, April 21, for a doubleheader to wrap up the three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
