NAPERVILLE, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – With 18 holes in the books at the 2018 Mid-American Conference Championship, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team sits in third-place after shooting a 305. The day began with a frost delay before players enjoyed sunshine and temperatures in the low-60s for the remainder of the round. No. 16 Kent State University leads the way after posting a six-under 282 at the par-72, 6,028-yard Naperville Country Club course.
The Golden Flashes hold a 21-stroke lead heading into day two, that total includes holding down four of the tournament's top 10 slots. Toledo is in second-place with a score of 303, followed by EMU (305), Northern Illinois (310), Akron (310), Western Michigan (318), Ohio (319), Ball State (321), Central Michigan (321), and Bowling Green (328).
Individually, Kent State's Pimnipa Panthong holds down the top-spot on the leaderboard with an opening round 67. Two other Golden Flashes were also able to crack par during the round with Chloe Salort adding a 70 and Michaela Finn a 71.
Senior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) and freshman Preaw Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International) paced the EMU attack with a two-over 74 for a five-way tie for seventh. Junior Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) is just one shot back in 12th with a 75.
Sophomore Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) and Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford) rounded out the scoring with an 82 and an 83, respectively.
The EMU women's golf program will continue the MAC Championships tomorrow with the second round of action beginning in an 8:30 a.m. tee time. Follow live scoring throughout the tournament at Golfstat.com.
