Multiple players had career milestones in the victory
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team bounced back with a solid 6-1 win over Concordia University Wednesday evening, April 11, at Oestrike Stadium. EMU (11-19, 5-4 MAC) led from start to finish over the Cardinals (23-10, 5-6 WHAC).
Both the offense and defense excelled, as EMU knocked out nine hits, while only allowing five hits of its own. Leading the offense was sophomore Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) who finished with three hits as well as an RBI. Redshirt freshman Mike Monahan (Saline, Mich.-Saline) had a career-day in his first career start, notching his first two hits as an Eagle, as well as driving in his first run. Finally, fellow freshman Shane Easter (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Comstock) had the first multi-RBI game of his career, notching a two-run single.
On the mound, freshman Luke McGuire (Shelby Township, Mich.-Stevenson) also had a career-best day, going the first six innings while only allowing three hits and one run, while striking out six batters to earn his first win. In relief, sophomores Brett Stenger (Kingsville, Ontario-Kingsville District (Indian Hills C.C.)) and John Holt (Saline, Mich.-Saline) both tossed scoreless frames, while junior Mitchell Sparks (Willis, Texas-Carmel (Ind.) (Iowa Lakes C.C.)) earned his first EMU save after pitching around a bases loaded and no outs situation in the ninth.
EMU leapt ahead in the first inning with a couple of RBI hits. Owings started the scoring with an RBI double after a double from junior Max Schuemann (Porage, Mich.-Portage Northern) the batter before. Later in the frame, Monahan notched his first hit and RBI after beating out an infield single, making it 2-0 after one.
McGuire cruised through the first four innings, only allowing one hit and striking out four. He allowed a solo home run in the fifth, but kept the lead into the bottom of the frame. There, EMU got one back on a double steal. With runners on the corners, Owings broke for second, allowing Schuemann to swipe home, making it a two-run lead again, 3-1, into the sixth.
After another scoreless frame from McGuire in the sixth, EMU extended its lead in the bottom half with three more runs. Easter started it off with a two-RBI single, his first two-RBI hit of the season. Later in the frame, Schuemann drove in another on an RBI fielder's choice, putting the tally at 6-1 into the seventh.
From there, EMU's pitching carried it the rest of the way with a scoreless seventh from Stenger and scoreless eighth from Holt, leading to the ninth. In the ninth, the bases became loaded with no outs, so Sparks was summoned from the bullpen for the save opportunity. After a line out, which led to a throw out at home by Easter, there were two away. Sparks then got the next batter to fly out, sealing the win.
EMU hits the road this weekend for a three-game series against MAC foe Ohio University. Game one against the Bobcats is set to begin at 6 p.m., Friday, April 13.
