Baseball Falls in Game Two of Series at BGSU
3/31/2018 2:06:00 PM | Baseball
Junior Max Schuemann recorded his 100th hit of this career
EMU (7-17, 2-3 MAC) was only out-hit by one, 8-7, but BGSU (8-18, 3-2 MAC) used the strength of three home runs and some EMU miscues to take the commanding seven-run win. Eastern also capitalized off BGSU errors, as all three runs scored were without an RBI.
Leading the Eagles offensively were junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) and redshirt freshman Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice), who both had two-hit days, each with a double. Schuemann's first hit was the 100th of his career.

BGSU got on the board first, striking for a solo home run in the second inning. Sandwiched between that were 1-2-3 innings in the first and third from junior Jackson Shaver (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern (Grand Rapids C.C.)) to keep it tight.
Eastern tied things back up in the fourth on some textbook base running from Schuemann. He led things off with a hustle double on a hit to right center, and got to third on a lineout to right. With two outs, the shortstop took advantage of a pitch that bounced off the glove of the catcher, as he scampered home to even the tally at one.
The tie was short lived, however, as BGSU struck for five runs in the bottom of the fourth, including two more home runs, to make it 6-1 into the fifth inning. After a scoreless fifth, EMU got a couple back in the sixth with more solid base running.
Freshman Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) led off the inning with a hit by pitch, and was then able to advance to second on a wild pitch. After another wild pitch, a bad throw down to third allowed the speedster to score. Later in the sixth, after singles from Timko and sophomore Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline), a third wild pitch in the inning scored Timko, putting the score at 6-3. Bowling Green struck back with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, getting its lead back up to five, 8-3, with three innings to play.
BGSU did not relent in the bottom of the seventh, getting two more to grab their largest lead, 10-3, into the eighth. EMU could not muster any more offense the rest of the way, evening the weekend series at one.
EMU and BGSU will return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon, April 1, for the rubber match at Steller Field. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.
