Errors proved to be costly for the Green and White
NOTRE DAME, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Battling through wet conditions, the Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a non-conference bout against the University of Notre Dame, Tuesday, March 27, at Melissa Cook Stadium. EMU's (4-22, 0-3 MAC) defensive miscues proved costly in the 6-1 loss to the Fighting Irish (21-10, 5-2 ACC).
Senior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Wodlan) and junior Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) each registered hits to lead the Green and White offense, while junior Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) recorded her team-leading 15th RBI of the season.
Notre Dame jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second, before tacking on two more in the third to hold a 6-0 edge through three frames.
In the fourth, Logan broke things open with her sixth double of the season, but a diving catch led to a double play and stopped EMU in its tracks.
Eastern Michigan plated a run in the sixth to cut into Notre Dame's lead. Hostetler battled at the plate, winning a nine-pitch at bat, before lacing a single to center. The New Haven, Ind. native then came around to score a few at bats later thanks to an Akles' sac fly, as EMU fell short, 6-1.
Senior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) entered in relief, allowing just four hits over 4.1 innings of work and striking out one.
The Eagles return to #MACtion this weekend when they open the home portion of the slate against Ohio University, March 30-31. Action gets underway at Varsity Field, Friday, March 30 at 3 p.m.
