YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team opened the Mid-American Conference season in heartbreaking fashion, falling, 4-3, in 11 innings to Miami University in the home opener, Friday, March 23, at Oestrike Stadium.
With the score knotted at three going into the 11th inning, the Eagles' (5-14, 0-1 MAC) home opener was spoiled when sophomore Will Vogelgesang laid down a safety squeeze to plate junior Hayden Senger as the RedHawks (12-6, 1-0 MAC) escaped with a one-run victory to open the three-game series.
EMU tallied three runs on nine hits, with eight different Eagles recording a hit. Offensively, the Green and White were led by redshirt freshman Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice), who finished 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and a run for his eighth multi-hit game of the campaign. Junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) had a two-RBI day, going 1-for-4 and stealing his team-high 14th base of the season.
Senior Justin McMurtrey (Redding, Calif.-Shasta (Butte C.C.)) got the start for the Eagles, pitching a career-high six innings while giving up just one run on seven hits. In relief, freshman Thomas House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross) tossed two scoreless in the seventh and eighth, allowing just one hit.
After a scoreless first inning, EMU broke the deadlock in the second. Timko led off the frame with a single into right field before junior Kolton Schenker (Augusta, Kan.-Augusta (Labette C.C.)) drew a four-pitch walk. With runners on second and third with one out, junior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) walked to load the bases and senior Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) was hit by a pitch, scoring Timko to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
Miami restored parity in the top of the third inning. Vogelgesang uncorked a triple into deep right, and was plated by senior Adrian Texidor's base hit up the middle to knot the score at one.
The RedHawks stranded two runners in the top of the fifth, and the Eagles wasted little time recapturing the lead. DeVenney was plunked for the second consecutive plate appearance to start the bottom half of the frame, while freshmen Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) and Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) added back-to-back bunt singles to load the bases with nobody out. Schuemann then chopped a 2-1 pitch past the third baseman and into left field to drive home DeVenney and Jones as the Eagles moved back in front, 3-1.
House entered from the bullpen in the top of the seventh and hurled two scoreless innings to preserve the Eagles' two-run advantage. The Green and White remained on top, 3-1, going into the ninth inning.
Miami refused to go away quietly, loading the bases with one out to start the top of the ninth. After sophomore pinch-hitter Grant Hartwig struck out swinging to send the RedHawks down to their final out, redshirt sophomore Kyle Winkler ripped a two-run single through the middle to even the score at three. EMU was unable to create any walk-off magic as the game headed into extra innings. After a scoreless 10th, Miami plated the eventual winning run in the top of the 11th, and kept EMU at bay to seal the game.
EMU and Miami will meet again tomorrow afternoon, March 24, for game two of the three-game series. First pitch from Oestrike Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
