Jackson Shaver pitched a career-high six innings in the loss
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team put together a strong performance on the mound, but came up short against Miami University, 3-1, Saturday, March 24, at Oestrike Stadium.
The Eagles (5-15, 0-2 MAC) manufactured a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but were denied their first conference victory against the RedHawks (13-6, 2-0 MAC).
Junior Jackson Shaver (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern (Grand Rapids C.C.)) lasted a career-high six innings for the Green and White, allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out three. Fellow junior Mitchell Sparks (Willis, Texas-Carmel (Ind.) (Iowa Lakes C.C.)) pitched two shutout innings in relief before freshman Scott Granzotto (Northville, Mich.-Gabriel Richard) tossed a perfect ninth.
The Eagles were held to six hits in the contest, with the top of the order doing the most damage. Freshman Jared Kauffman (Springboro, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) finished 2-for-5 with two singles for his fourth multi-hit game of the campaign, while junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) went 1-for-4 with his team-best seventh double of the season.
Shaver made quick work of the RedHawks in the early stages, hurling three consecutive eight-pitch frames to open the contest. Miami made its breakthrough in the top of the fourth on a run from sophomore Cal Elvers. After whacking a one-out double down the left-field line and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Elvers scored when redshirt senior Ross Haffey lined a single into left field to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles threatened to score in the bottom of the fourth, as redshirt freshman Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) walked before freshman Eli Gora (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson) and senior Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) picked up back-to-back singles to load the bases with two outs. However, EMU was unable to push across a run as the RedHawks remained in front, 1-0.
Miami added to its lead in the top of the fifth when redshirt sophomore Kyle Winkler sent a two-out double into right field, plating junior Dallas Hall and senior Adrian Texidor to give the RedHawks a 3-0 edge.
EMU was able to manufacture some offense in the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) hit a leadoff single down the right field line, reached second on a botched pickoff attempt, and got to third on a groundout. Junior Kolton Schenker (Augusta, Kan.-Augusta (Labatte C.C)) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Owings and cutting the Eagles' deficit to 3-1 heading into the final frame.
Leading off the bottom of the ninth for the Green and White, DeVenney reached base on a walk, but was caught stealing second attempting to advance on a wild pitch. Junior John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge) also picked up a pinch-hit walk, and was lifted for redshirt sophomore Joey Sweigart (Saline, Mich.-Saline), who made his collegiate debut as pinch-runner. With the tying run at the plate, freshman Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) flew out to center and Kauffman grounded out to first to wrap up the contest.
Eastern Michigan and Miami will conclude the three-game Mid-American Conference series tomorrow, March 25. First pitch from Oestrike Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
