EMU looks for its first individual champion since 2009

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team turns its sights toward the postseason and the 2018 Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships held this weekend, Saturday-Sunday, March 3-4, at Central Michigan University's McGuirk Arena in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. The tournament begins with quarterfinal bouts at noon on Saturday, while placement matches will take place starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

ALL-TIME AT MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS: Since joining the conference in 1971-72, EMU has captured one team conference championship and has had 24 individual titles.  EMU's team title came in 1996 when it won five of the 10 weight classes. Its last individual champion came in 2009 when 197 pounder John McClure won the crown.

LAST SEASON AT THE MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS: EMU placed six of ten wrestlers in the top six of their respective weight classes on its way to a seventh-place team finish with 64 points. Gage Hutchison finished runner-up at heavyweight after starting at the sixth seed, and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Kyle Springer, and Zac Carson were the other top-four finishers, taking fourth at 141 lbs, and 157 lbs., respectively.

NCAA ALLOCATIONS: The NCAA announced its allocations at each weight class Feb. 24, with the MAC earning 25 spots. Class-by-class the conference has automatic bids at 125 (2), 133 (4), 141 (3), 149 (2), 157 (3), 165 (1), 174 (3), 184 (2), 197 (2) and HWT (3).

MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS PRE-SEEDING: The Mid-American Conference announced its pre-seeding for the MAC Championships, Feb. 27.  Here is a look at where EMU stands going into the tournament:

MOVING UP THE RECORD BOOK: In his five-year EMU career, Gage Hutchison has racked up 92 career victories, which ranks sixth all-time. EMU Hall of Fame inductee Steve Brown holds the all-time record with 117 wins.

TOTAL DOMINATION: This season, redshirt senior Kyle Springer has been a bonus point machine for the Eagles. In his 17 wins, 13 of them have come with bonus points, including a team-high eight major decisions, two technical falls, and three pins.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: EMU made the most of its short, three-dual home schedule. EMU won all three matches over conference foes, winning the bouts by a combined score of 88-22. 

UP NEXT ON THE MATS: The EMU wrestlers that qualify for the NCAA Championships will head to Cleveland, Ohio for the three-day event held at Quicken Loans Arena, March 15-17.
