YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — With dual competition in the rearview mirror, the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team will send a small contingent to the Ohio State University Winter Invitational this weekend, Feb. 10-11, in Columbus, Ohio. The two-day event will pit the Eagles against swimmers from some of the top teams in the nation, including host, No. 11 Ohio State, No. 14 Kentucky, and No. 22 Notre Dame.
EMU closed out dual competition on a high note, defeating Albion College, 150-107, on Senior Day, Feb. 2. The Eagles won 15-of-15 events on the day to best the Britons. En route to the victory, 12 different Eagles notched a win while sophomore Amelia Armstrong-Grant (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline) paced the Eagles with two individual victories. Armstrong-Grant used a time of 24.09 to win the 50 freestyle before turning in a career-best time of 57.50 to take the 100 butterfly. Fellow sophomore Sophia Tsafantakis (Washington, Mich.-Romeo) had an excellent showing on the springboard, posting a pair of the top scores. In the 3-meter, Tsafantakis took the event with a career-best score of 322.65 before posting a season-best score of 302.47 to win the 1-meter. The Washington, Mich. native was ultimately named Mid-American Conference Diver of the Week for her efforts against Albion Thursday, Feb. 8.
At last season's OSU Winter Invitational, Abby Aumiller and then-freshman Marcella Da Costa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) paced the Green and White, turning in a trio of top-16 finishes apiece. Da Costa claimed eight-place in the 100 fly, clocking in with a career-best time of 57.93, while also adding a 16th place finish in the 100 backstroke at 59.00. On the second day of the competition, the Brazil native saw her best placement of the meet in the 200 fly. Turning in a then-career best time of 2:09.20, Da Costa was slotted fifth overall.
This season, the Green and White will send a mix of freshmen and veterans to the Buckeye State for the annual invitational.
