Eagles Wrap up Day One of OSU Winter Invitational

Eastern was paced with five career-best times

COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team completed day one of competition at the Ohio State University Winter Invitational Saturday, Feb. 10. Overall, the Eagles had seven top-15 finishes and five career-best times on the day.

The Eagles grabbed a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay to get things underway in the finals session. Freshmen Avrie Stewart (Menominee, Mich.-Menominee) and Hunter Ignasiak (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) teamed up with senior Abby Saddler (Chanhassen, Minn.-Minnetonka) and sophomore Kylie Sutherlin (Fishers, Ind.) to take runner-up with a time of 1:47.75.

Sutherlin was EMU's top finisher on the day, claiming third in the 100 butterfly with a blistering time of 55.94. In the preliminaries session in the morning, Sutherlin posted a career-best time of 55.88 to qualify for the finals.

Stewart also finished inside the top-10 for Eastern in the 100 backstroke. Stewart placed eighth after touching in at 57.45.

In the 500 free, sophomore Sydney Thomas (Jamestown, N.Y.) shaved nearly four seconds off her season-best time of 5:03.76 in the prelims to finish 12th in the finals with a career-best time of 4:59.92.

A pair of veteran Eagles led the way in the 100 breaststroke, both finishing in the top-15. Sophomore Arianna Ortiz (Jupiter, Fla.-Jupiter) and Saddler both qualified for the 'B' final In the 100 breaststroke, coming away with a 12th and 14th-place finish, respectively. 

Thomas turned in a career-best time of 4:26.86 in the 400 individual medley to take third in the prelims, but did not compete in the finals session.

Senior Hannah Newell (Ames, Iowa-Ames) had an outstanding showing for the Green and White in the 100 freestyle where she clocked in a season-best time of 52.69, good for 14th place. Meanwhile, Ignasiak used a career-best time of 52.75 to tie for 15th.

Eastern Michigan capped the day with a first-place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:36.75.

The Eagles return to the pool tomorrow, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. for prelims. The final session is slated for 4 p.m.
