Big Offensive Day Not Enough for EMU Against Lynn University

2/20/2018 6:12:00 PM | Baseball

Eastern had 13 runs on 11 hits, including three home runs

BOCA RATON, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team came out on the wrong end of a, 17-13, slugfest against Lynn University Tuesday evening, Feb. 20, at Lynn Baseball Stadium. EMU (0-5) had another solid offensive showing, tallying 11 hits among seven batters, including three home runs and seven steals, to bring their stolen base total to 19 after just five games.

Four players had two-hit days, led by junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) who had two-RBIs as well as his first home run of the season. Senior Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) also had a home run, a two-run shot, which was the first of his EMU career. Junior Kolton Schenker (Augusta, Kan.-Augusta (Labette C.C.)) had the third dinger, also a two-run shot, and his first in an EMU uniform.

On the mound, sophomore John Holt (Saline, Mich.-Saline) had a great season debut, pitching the final three innings without giving up a run or hit, and striking out three.

Lynn (7-4) grabbed the early lead, going for three runs in the first inning. EMU did not record a base runner in the first two frames, but had an offensive explosion in the third.

It all started with a leadoff walk from freshman Eli Gora (Cincinnati, Ohio-Anderson), followed by a sophomore Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) single, putting two runners on. After a sacrifice bunt, junior Cameron Cruz (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton (Mesa C.C.)) drove in the first with on a fielder's choice ground ball, as the throw went home, but was wide. With runners on the corners, Eastern tried a double steal, with Cruz being gunned out, but Hager scampering home, making it 3-2.

Schuemann kept the inning going with a single, followed by a sophomore Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) walk, and double steal, putting runners on second and third. Sophomore Nick Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) was there to tie the contest at three on an infield single. Another double steal scored the fourth run of the frame, and then EMU got the biggest hit of the third inning, a two run home run from Schenker, to put the tally at 6-4. All told, EMU scored six runs on four hits, and four steals.

Lynn was quick to respond in the bottom half of the third, getting two runs on a two-out double. In the fourth, the Fighting Knights found the lead again, scoring three more to go back ahead, 8-6, into the fifth.

The high powered offenses continued to slug it out in the middle innings, as Schuemann went deep in the fifth for a two-run home run, his first homer of the season, to tie the contest at eight apiece. EMU went on to grab the lead later on in the fifth on an RBI single from freshman Nate Jones (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview), putting them back ahead, 9-8.

Lynn's slugging did not relent in the bottom half though, as the Fighting Knights sprung for nine more runs to retake the commanding 17-9 lead after five innings. Following a couple scoreless frames, EMU got a pair back in the top of the eighth on a two-run homer from DeVenney. His first career home run made it a six-run game with one more trip to the plate.

Holt completed his third scoreless inning in the bottom of the eighth, sending it to the ninth. Eastern manufactured a pair of runs on two RBI groundouts from redshirt freshman Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) and sophomore Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown Community) in the ninth, but it was not enough in the four-run defeat.

EMU wraps up its spring break swing when it heads up to Jackson, Miss. for a four-game series with Jackson State University, Feb. 23-25. The weekend begins with a 7 p.m. first pitch, Friday, Feb. 23.
